I AM NOT AN AVIAN DIETICIAN, I AM NOT A VET-
I do know that most companion parrots suffer either malnutrition, obesity or some diet related illness at some point in their lives.
I do know that a correct diet can improve a parrots health, behaviour & lifespan dramitically.
I work with bird who have lived all their lives on a dusty, pet shop bought , dry seed mix & peanuts & I see the results, over weight or malnurished birds, birds with fatty tumors, failing kidneys & livers, calcium & many other deficencies.
Parrots of any age will show some improvemt on a better diet.
The more you make food fun , the more they want to eat it.
We feed a varied diet of calcium rich veggies such as Kale.Brocolli e.c.t. Every day our birds have at least 3 veggies, carrots, peas, cauliflower, sweetcorn e.c.t.
Every day they have sprouted peas, beans& pulses, as they sprout they become highly nutritional & easy to digest, low fat easy to prepare & readily accepted.
Cooked brown rice, pasta, boiled egg, birdy bread, fruit dried & fresh , mash & some of any healthy veggie tpye food, low in fat & salt & sugar.
I enjoy preparing the fresh food every morning & watching the birds devour their meals, trying new things.
We do have some birds that are on a special diet & we always check the diet with our vet first.
